Samsung is well known for high definition televisions and mobile phones, but the company also has a successful line of notebook computers. The RF711-S02 is a 17.3-inch laptop that can be used for gaming thanks to a dedicated graphics card. The large screen is perfect for those who rely on a mobile gaming platform, such as students. Unfortunately, the screen does not support full HD 1080p resolution. Instead, the max resolution is 1600 x 900, which is disappointing. However, if youre on a budget, the street price on this notebook falls under $1,050, which isnt bad for a 17.3-inch system.

Another nice feature is the processor. The Samsung RF711-S02 is equipped with an Intel Core i7-2630QM quad-core mobile processor. While it is the more economical chip in the 2nd Generation Intel Core i7 line, the 2630QM does a great job and offers fast performance. The base clock speed is 2.0GHz with Turbo Boost taking it up to 2.9GHz.


The Samsung RF711-S02 also includes 4GB of DDR3 memory. While this will suffice for most mainstream users, it is a bit on the low side for a high performance machine. The RF711-S02 does support up to 8GB via two memory slots, so you could swap the included memory for two 4GB modules.

Gameplay is also smooth considering the Samsung RF711-S02 is equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M video card with 1GB DDR3. When using the GT 540M, its best to disable anti-aliasing, but other than that, the card performs well even in the latest games. Whats nice is that this card features Optimus technology, which switches between high performance and energy saving graphics without having to manually change the settings. This helps improve battery life.

One downside to the RF711-S02 is hard drive performance. While the 750GB drive is spacious, it definitely wont win any races at 5400RPM. Youll find load times to be slower using this drive compared to a 7200RPM hard drive or a hybrid drive/SSD.

Another beneficial feature is the amount of ports on this notebook. The RF711-S02 has an HDMI output, two USB 3.0 ports, and two USB 2.0 ports. One of the ports even lets you charge an electronic device, such as an MP3 player or smartphone, when the notebook is powered off. This is just a little extra convenience.

Overall, the Samsung RF711-S02 is a great notebook for the price, especially if youre just getting into gaming or trying to stay on budget. The NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M is an above average graphics card for a system under $1,100. There are a few disappointing features, such as a slow hard drive, minimal amount of memory, and the lower resolution screen. Kingston is back with a new flash drive -- the DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 (DTU30G2). Touted as Kingston’s fastest USB Flash drive, the drive uses a native USB 3.0 controller for better performance and power management. It is actually second generation model of DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0.

The DTU30G2 has a read speed up to 100MB/s, and a write speed up to 70 MB/s. When plugged into a USB 2.0 port, the drive has read and write speeds of around 30MB/s. The DTU30G2 is available in 16-, 32- and 64GB capacities.

ASUS has shrunk down its popular 17.3-inch G73 gaming notebook into a more manageable 15.6-inch size with the introduction of its G53SW. Is this travel-friendly gaming laptop as impressive as its bigger brother? We find out.

The G53 packs a punch, especially with the second-generation Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and its powerful Nvidia GTX 460M graphics card with a whopping 1.5GB of its own memory. The two-year warranty with one year of accidental damage protection is also worth noting; most competitors do not offer this kind of coverage standard.

Build and Design
The G53SW is essentially a shrunken version of ASUS’ larger and extremely popular 17.3-inch G73JH and G73JW gaming notebooks. The notebook’s design imitates a stealth bomber aircraft, especially the rear with its recessed and upward-angled cooling exhaust ports. The G53SW is quite unique; the only notebooks that likely get more attention from onlookers are Alienware laptops.

Most of the G53SW’s touchable surfaces are covered in a rubber finish, which feels great and adds to the long-term durability. The notebook is appreciably absent of glossy plastic. The G53SW is constructed entirely of plastic. The plastic is reasonably thick and does not make a cheap sound when tapped by a fingernail. The chassis is acceptably stiff but can be flexed by twisting the corners. The areas around the chassis are solid though cave in slightly under pressure.

The lid is attached the chassis via one large hinge. It is possible to open the lid with one hand. The lid flexes rather easily; additionally, the hinge could be a bit more supportive since the display can move around a bit. I also wish the display tilted back further. Fit and finish is good; there are no rough or unfinished edges. The overall build quality is above average; the lid could be sturdier, but otherwise there are no concerns.

Upgrading the G53SW is possible but not easy. Accessing the RAM and hard drive requires removing the keyboard, the palm rest, and several screws; then the bottom panel will pop off. The G53SW actually has two hard drive bays, though most configurations only come with a single drive.


Ports and Features

I bet I know the big question youre asking - was the Dell XPS M1330 worth the wait? Id like to answer that with a resounding YES. While its unacceptable that there has been a relatively high proportion of build faults with the laptop, Dell is dedicated to correcting these issues. Its far from an ideal situation, but I get to use this system while a new one is built and shipped to me.

Everything else just screams quality. The design is absolutely fantastic and rivals the most aesthetically pleasing designs out there. The materials used are premium and the price is lower than a comparable system. And despite all the things that have been said about Dell customer service, I truly believe that most of the employees are dedicated to making the customer happy, within reason. I know my experience has not given me any reason to doubt that.

Before purchasing this laptop, I was looking for something that was small, light and well built so I wouldnt cringe at the thought of bringing it to classes and business meetings daily. The Dell XPS M1330 serves that purpose admirably. If youre looking for a dedicated gaming machine or a budget laptop, look elsewhere, but if youre like me and want something portable for a fair price, the M1330 should be on your short list.

With a design that is second to none in its price range and excellent performance the Dell XPS M1330 is sure to be one of the most popular notebooks of 2007. As of this writing the M1330 First Look Review is already the most popular article in our forums based on views and replies.
